Ona Mae Shawnee Harjo, age 84, passed away peacefully Friday, February 10, 2017, at Prairie House Memory Care in Broken Arrow. She was born March 8, 1932 in a small house on the banks of Bird Creek in Sperry, OK, to William "Bill" and Mary (Shapp) Shawnee. She was a 1954 graduate of Chilocco Indian School. After graduation she worked at the Eastern Oklahoma Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Talihina, OK. This experience inspired her to enter Nursing School at St. Johns in Tulsa. Her first nursing job was at Hillcrest Hospital. In truth, her life was dedicated to caring for others. Ona Mae raised three children, Tom, Theresa and Mary. Her career at Hillcrest spanned 36 years. She spread joy and love by introducing the Chihuahua into the family pet spectrum. She was a champion stomp dance shell shaker, Judo master and Indian Football player.
Ona Mae is survived by: her three children; her two grandchildren, Mekko and Maya; her sister, Wilma; her brother, Charles; and many nieces and nephews.
Native American singing and Visitation will be Monday, February 13th, starting at 7 p.m., at the Quapaw Tribe Long House, 5681 South 630 Road, Quapaw, OK 74363. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at 10 a.m., at the Quapaw Tribe Long House. Burial will follow at the Stafford-Shapp Cemetery. After the burial everyone is invited to a Feast in celebration of Ona Mae's life at the Long House.
