Obituary

Sargent - Dr. Patricia Ann, beloved wife and mother, died June 16, 2026. Under the reign of Pope Pius XI and presidency of Mr. Herbert Hoover, she was born on February 12, 1933 to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Patrick Turner of Arkansas City, Kansas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Patrick Turner (Alta), husband - Dr Earl Sargent, a brother and sister-in-law - Mr. and Mrs. William (Ivy) Turner of St. Helens, Merseyside, England, and her brother - Mr. Donald Turner of Maryville, Illinois. Dr. Sargent is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Donald Turner (Beverly) of Maryville, Illinois. Her daughter Gail and son-in-law Jeff Jacobs are attorneys, while her son Stephan is a professor at Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Dr. Sargent has one beloved Scottish Terrier, Fala McTavish Sargent. On August 21, 1966, she married Dr. Earl Sargent in Greeley, Colorado. She is an active member of Holy Family Catholic Cathedral. She remained active in church work, travel, family, and education.

As an infant, Dr. Sargent's family moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma. There, she attended Lincoln Elementary School, East Junior High School, and the Ponca City Senior High School. During her senior year of high school Dr. Sargent was the president of the Future Teachers of America Club. Following graduation in 1951, Dr. Sargent attended and graduated from Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa. In 1955, she received her bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas with an emphasis in library science and biology.

Dr. Sargent taught for two years in Denver, Colorado, serving as a librarian at an elementary school. Next, she taught seventh and eighth grade science at Forest Heights Junior High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Following two years there, Dr. Sargent attended the University of Virginia at Charlottesville and obtained a master's degree in science education (1960). After graduation, she taught at Roosevelt Elementary School and West Junior High School in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She then returned to Virginia, teaching at Albemarle County High School in Charlottesville, Virginia from 1962-1965. While there, she pursued further postgraduate work at the University of Virginia.

In 1965, Dr. Sargent began a doctoral program at The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, majoring in College Student Personnel Administration. She received her PhD on August 12, 1972. While the children were young, Dr. Sargent stayed home as a full-time mother. Later she taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa. Subsequently, she taught science at North Intermediate High School and at Childers Middle School in Broken Arrow. Dr. Sargent was appointed to the Oklahoma Textbook Commission by Gov. Henry Bellmon in the 1980's. In 1986, she received the Science Teacher Award for Excellence in Science Education. In 1990, Dr. Sargent was named the Broken Arrow Teacher of the Year and a state semi-finalist for State Teacher of the Year. In 1999, Dr. Sargent retired from the Broken Arrow School System, following decades of distinguished service to the district. In March, 2011, Dr. Sargent was selected as a Distinguished Alumna of Northern Oklahoma College (Tonkawa, Oklahoma) and inducted into the NOC Alumni Hall of Fame.

Dr. Sargent has been an active member of The Oklahoma Science Teachers' Association, The National Science Teachers' Association, The Oklahoma Education Association, Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Alpha Delta Kappa. She is also an active member of The Holy Family Cathedral Women's Club. Dr. Sargent enjoys spending time and holidays at the family's summer home in Kansas.

A Holy Rosary will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:00 PM, at Holy Family Cathedral, led by Deacon Paul Louderback. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Cathedral on Wednesday, June 24th at 10:00 AM, celebrated by The Very Rev. Fr. Brian O'Brien. Entombment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation and viewing will be held at Fitzgerald's Ivy Chapel on Sunday (1PM - 6 PM), Monday (9AM - 8 PM), and Tuesday (9AM - 2 PM).
