Obituary

Patrick Eugene "Gene" McGinty was born to Michael and Beatrice McGinty on December 22nd 1935, and passed into the hands of God on March 17th 2018, at the age of 82. Originally from the Irish American neighborhoods of Cleveland, Ohio, Gene met his childhood sweetheart, the girl down the street, Helen Marie Paskert, at age 9. The two married in 1958, and have three children: Kathy, Karen and Linda, who have blessed them with nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Gene was always known for his resourcefulness and hard work. After graduating from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, he paid his way through college by working in the nearby steel mills, and singing at weddings, anniversaries and other celebrations. He was locally renowned for his ability to sing "Danny Boy." After graduating from John Carroll University in 1958, Gene received his Army officer's commission through ROTC. Captain McGinty gave seven years of active and reserve service to the US Army from '58-'65.

Following his release from active duty, Gene began a 38 year career with Cities Service and Citgo Petroleum Corporation, which brought him and the family to Tulsa in 1967. Gene continued his strong ethic of resourcefulness and hard work, gaining a reputation as a man of character and dependability. Through the '70s, '80s and '90s, he rose to become a Midwest Regional Manager and then retired from Citgo in 1998.

During the next 12 years Gene helped organize many of his fellow retirees as dedicated volunteers for Habitat for Humanity working on Habitat houses and furnishings. He also contributed generously to efforts and projects in support of families of deployed Oklahoma National Guard soldiers.

Retirement also allowed more time for his favorite recreation – golf. He loved to swing a club with good friends, and was proud of his hole-in-one at South Lakes in Jenks, as well as the opportunity to golf at St. Andrews while visiting Scotland and old kin in Ireland. Friends and family will remember Gene's steady observance of Catholic faith, his enjoyment of Irish traditions, and his love of family and country.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents Michael and Beatrice McGinty. He is survived by his brother, Michael "Joe" McGinty, and his sisters, Patricia Lowry and Margaret Marks. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years, Helen McGinty, as well as his children and their spouses: Mark and Kathy (McGinty) Mustoe; Hopper and Karen (McGinty) Smith; Linda McGinty; their grandchildren and great grandchildren; and of course the many, many friends through the years.

A wake and praying of the Rosary will be held at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel at 6:00 pm, following a visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m., on Friday, March 23rd. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24th, with a reception to follow in Dorney Hall.

Friends may honor Gene's memory with contributions to: the St. Pius X Scholarship Fund "Support a Student", Catholic Charities of Tulsa, or John 3:16 Mission in Tulsa.
