Gary was born and raised in Chicago Illinois. He was 17 years old when he joined the Navy. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy he moved to Colorado Springs to join his mother, sisters and brother who had relocated there.   After spending many years in Colorado he moved his wife and kids to Oklahoma. He lived in Tulsa Oklahoma when he passed away.

He loved music, especially the blues, loved riding his Harley, and enjoyed spending time in his garage tinkering with things. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, hard-working man, good sense of humor, proud Patriot and US Navy veteran.

Preceded in death by his parents Robert Hans Brothersen, and Catherine Bates, his two sisters Elizabeth Brothersen and Gayle Brothersen, his brother Robert Brothersen and son Robert Bates.

He is survived by: his three children, Sandra Harmer and her husband Russ, son, Michael Bates, and daughter, Rebecca Bates; his former wife and mother of his children, Janet Bates; two sisters, Marilyn Bruning and her husband Jerry, and Janice Bird and her husband Jerry; his four nephews, Stephen King, Tony King, Joel Bird, and John Bates; and his grandchildren, Justin Smith, Jacob Smith, Lauren Smith, Nathan Smith, Corrin Hunt - Bates, Seamus Bates, Zoe Bates and Hayden Grisby.

His funeral service will be held at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery, located at 1423 Cemetery Road, Fort Gibson, Oklahoma 74434, on Wednesday, October 9th 2019, at 2 p.m.Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel, 918-585-1151
