Obituary

Robert T. "Bob" Brooks, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; children Virginia "Ginger" Howard and spouse Joseph of Boonville, In.; Carolyn Schwartz and spouse Roger of Houston, Texas; Rhett Brooks, of Tulsa; and Robert "Matt" Brooks of Tulsa; four grandchildren, Shelby and Carson Brooks of Owasso and Jessie and Cassie Schwartz of Houston. Also, one brother, Morris J. Brooks and wife Betty of Huntsville, Alabama. Bob was born on Jan. 20, 1932, in Chattanooga, Tn., to Fredrick Brooks and Ruth (Morris) Brooks, the youngest of six children. He served in the US Air Corp on Iwo Jima and Guam just after the end of WW II and three years in Special Weapons at Sandia Base, Albuquerque , NM. Bob received his BS in Business Administration and MA in Economics from Middle Tennessee State University. Bob began his career in athletics administration at MTSU where he served as their first ever Sports Information Director. In 1969, Bob became the first Sports Information Director at ORU in Tulsa. He went on to serve for two years as Director of University Business Affairs & Relations and as Athletic Director from 1975 to 1984. Bob then became Athletic Director at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tn. From 1984 until 1989. In 1991, he returned to ORU as Athletic Director until his retirement in 1994 having served 30 years in intercollegiate athletics and university administration. A Rotarian with 41 years of perfect attendance, Bob was a former Murfreesboro, Tn. Jaycee president and was President of Southside Rotary in Tulsa in 1983-84. He is a Paul Harris Fellow, and a Southside Star. Bob was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and President of the Ambassador Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Trinity UMC Memorial Fund, 3737 S Peoria, Tulsa, OK 74105. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Friday, April 8, 2011 at Trinity United Methodist Church.
