FUNK – Robert D (Bob), age 90, was born in Tulsa, June 21, 1925 to Herbert and Lucile Funk. He passed away Thursday, September 3rd surrounded by his family. Bob graduated from Holy Family High School in 1943 and was granted a scholarship to Notre Dame, but he chose instead to serve his country during WWII. He enlisted and bravely fought for his country in the South Pacific as a Navy Seabee assigned to the USS Alcoa Patriot. After the war, he continued his education at Notre Dame and then the University of Tulsa. In 1947, he began his 45-year tenure as the much-loved Circulation/Distribution Manager at PennWell Publishing Company, where he also served as an officer on the US Postal Customer Council. In 1948, he married the love of his life, Eileen Russell. They made their home in Tulsa, where they enjoyed 56 years of marriage. Bob was heartbroken upon Eileen's death, at which time he developed a passion for writing poetry. Bob was well-known throughout the Tulsa community for his involvement in the Church of the Madalene Men's Club and Choir, his 25-year dedication to coaching youth sports, his love of playing bridge, and "competitive" fishing with his friends. He was an avid runner on the Riverside trails, until his knees would take no more. Bob's penchant for winning the games he played, coached, or simply attended is widely known, and it is an undisputed fact among those who knew him: Bob never met a referee he liked. Bob is preceded in death by his lovely wife, Eileen, and his beautiful sisters, Vivian Haas and Helen Griffin. He is survived by his eight children, who know him as a dedicated and supportive father who exemplified the value of hard work and family: Donna Wienecke, Doug Funk (Marcia), Rita Funk, Jim Funk (Jan), David Funk, Judy Morrall, Janet Chambers (Bill), and Becky Holder (Roger). His family has grown with 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. We will all miss him dearly. His family would like to extend a special thank you to the loving care provided by Brookdale Cedar Ridge and Physician's Choice Hospice. A Rosary will be held on Monday, September 7th at 7:00 pm and a Mass celebrating Bob's life on Tuesday, September 8th at 10:00 am, both at Church of the Madalene in Tulsa. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
