Obituary

Rose Shirley (RoShirley aka R. Shirley) Goodman passed away Feb. 9, 2014.

She was born in Houston, Texas, in 1925, and raised in Abilene, Texas, where she attended Hardin Simmons University to study music.
As a soprano opera singer entertaining with USO during WWII, she met and married a GI, Bertram B. Goodman, from Tulsa, OK. They moved to Hornell, NY and raised a family of 3. She was a loving mother, devoted wife, and an outstanding member of the community. When the children were old enough, she began her teaching career in the Hornell City School District teaching music and was adored by her students. She later went on to Alfred University to attain her master degree in education. After Bertram retired from the jewelry business and sold his store on Main Street, she and Bert moved to Tulsa, OK, where he was raised. Shirley joined the Tulsa Opera and performed in many of the shows, sharing the stage with top opera stars.

When Bertram passed away, she moved to the Tulsa Jewish Retirement Center and lived out the rest of her years helping those around her and advocating for those in need. She was a wonderful, larger than life personality, spiritual and empathetic, loving and kind. She touched the hearts of so many people over the years and was beloved by all.

She is survived by her son Jonathan B. Goodman of Fort Collins, CO, her daughter Susan B. Christensen of Midway, UT, and their children.

Her funeral service will be held at Temple Israel, 2004 E 22nd Pl, Tulsa, OK, Wednesday, 11:00 AM, followed immediately by a small family gathering at her grave site at Rose Hill Cemetery, 4161 E Admiral Pl, Tulsa, OK.
