Sanford "Stan" P. Burnstein, 84 of Tulsa passed away peacefully following a brief illness on March 5, 2018. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
Stan was born February 6, 1934 in Chicago, IL to Jacob and Ida Burnstein. As a young child he enjoyed frequent visits with his extended family in Toledo, OH. Stan had fond memories of his first job selling and delivering flowers for his uncle, Sam Bloom, who was a florist in Chicago. Stan learned to fly as a young man in Chicago and aviation became the passion he pursued as a career. He was a flight instructor and commercial airline pilot. While attending Kemper Military School in Booneville, MO, he met the love of his life, Irene Gribin of Tulsa, OK. They married in 1960 at the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa. Stan became a pilot for Great Lakes Airlines before going into the aviation business on his own. He was an entrepreneur founding numerous aviation enterprises including United Air Leasing, Air Transport International, GATX/Airlog, Omni Air Transport, Omni Air International, and 10 Tanker.
Philanthropy became an important part of Stan's life and he and Irene formed the Sanford P. and Irene F. Burnstein Family Foundation in 1989. They have supported and contributed to numerous organizations in the Tulsa community including founding A New Leaf, an organization providing individuals with developmental disabilities with life skills through horticulture therapy. A New Leaf continues to thrive to this date, due to their generosity.
In addition to Stan's interests in aviation, he enjoyed traveling the world and watching movies, educational programs and sporting events. He was an avid deep sea fisherman and enjoyed owning thoroughbred race horses.
Stan is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Teri Burnstein, Kim Coretz (son-in-law Rob Coretz), Dan Burnstein (life partner Martin Martinez); and his eight grandchildren, Adam, Mindy, Tyler, Ryan, Amy, Sam, Daniel and Ariella Mason (husband Justin Mason).
Services will be held at Temple Israel on Wednesday, March 7 at 11:30am. Donations in Stan's memory can be made to A New Leaf (P.O. Box 35903, Tulsa, OK 74153) or Zarrow Pointe (2021 E 71st St, Tulsa, OK 74136).
