Obituary

Shirley Lou Hunt Egan, 96, passed peacefully Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, at her Bowling Green, Kentucky, home with loved ones at her side.

Shirley was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on Jan. 12, 1929, to the late Ella Nora Carlton Hunt and Ancil Isaiah Hunt. She grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Marquette High School in 1947. She married her high school sweetheart, John F. (Jack) Egan, on Dec. 17, 1949. Shirley and Jack were married for 60 years before he passed away in 2009.

Shirley is survived by her son, John F. Egan III (Debra) and daughter Sherry Egan Anderson (John E.); grandchildren Amanda Egan Sanders, Michael Egan, Elizabeth Egan, Diana Egan, Darrin Egan, Jennifer Anderson Walton (Michael), and Jaclyn Anderson Davis (Jonathan); great-grandchildren McKenzie and McKayla Sanders, Henry and Elizabeth Walton, and Clark and Matthew Davis. In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was predeceased by her sister, Donna Hunt O'Brien, and brother, Carlton Hunt, six sisters- and brothers-in-law, two nieces and two nephews.

After graduating high school, Shirley studied at Ursuline Academy in Paola, Kansas, and later worked for the Carnation Milk Company in Tulsa. Following his graduation from the University of Tulsa, Jack joined Warren Petroleum Company, a career move that took them to Louisville, Kentucky, for a few years before returning to Tulsa. In January 1961, the young couple undertook the monumental challenge of purchasing and operating a propane gas company in Leitchfield, Kentucky, which they called home for the next 40 years. Shirley and Jack retired to Longboat Key, Florida, and in 2016, Shirley moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to be near her children.

Shirley was a faithful Catholic, and over the years, she served her parishes as a Eucharistic minister and a member of the Altar Society and Women's Guild. She enjoyed volunteering for church activities and at a local hospital in Kentucky. She had many creative talents that she expressed through needlework, oil painting, crafts, cooking, music and gardening. She loved her diamonds, but it was the twinkle in her eyes that shone the brightest. Shirley will be remembered for her gentle nature, kindness, optimism, perseverance and sense of humor.

Her family is grateful to her loving and devoted caregivers and the staffs at Chandler Park Assisted Living and Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
