Socorro Alicia Davis was born in Peru on December 27, 1926, to Roberto Palacios Mejia and Carmen Torres de Palacios. She passed away peacefully on October 15, 2022, in Tulsa at the age of 95.
Socorro was the second of ten children and the first girl. Her name, which means help, was apt as she aided her mother with her younger siblings. She attained a teaching certificate and began teaching at the age of nineteen. She taught until she met and married the love of her life, Clay Davis, in 1950. He was a core driller for Exxon, and they lived in and traveled to many interesting places, such as Colombia, Pakistan, Italy, and India. They had one daughter together and settled in Oklahoma City in the 1960s.
Socorro was a world-class artist as a quilter and doll maker. "I can make anything with my hands," she'd say. "If I see something I like, I can do it! I have always been able to do like that since I was a little girl. God has given me a good mind, and I guess that is why I'm still here you know. God has always taken care of me." She loved making things and loved even more to share them with friends and family. Her love flowed out of her creativity and need to express beauty in life. She added a special touch to everything she did.
Socorro's home was always welcoming. You could never visit her without being offered something delicious and homemade. She decorated for every season. Her house was full of the colors and textures of various things she made over the years. Christmas was her favorite time of the year because it was also the time of her birthday. Her deep Catholic faith was the undercurrent for everything she did. Even in her last weeks, she still faithfully prayed her rosary.
Socorro loved her family, raising her daughter and becoming Mimi to two generations of grandchildren. She loved visiting with her family members and always bragged about their accomplishments. She was a kind friend, meeting people from all over and treating them like family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, and she will be deeply missed.
Socorro is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Davis-Robb; her grandchildren Elizabeth Poe (Kevin), Ceilidh Robb, and Conor Robb; her great-grandchildren Olivia and Emilia Poe; and numerous friends and family members.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, 13400 N. Kelley Ave., OKC. Donations may be made in her memory to The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 405-525-2349.
