Obituary

Sr. Eugenia Brown (Anna Marie Brown) Benedictine Sister and long-time pastoral minister died on November 9, 2019 at St. Joseph Monastery, Tulsa. Sr. Eugenia was born on April 5, 1924 in Fletcher, Oklahoma. She entered St. Joseph Monastery in 1944 and professed her vows in 1946. She received a BS in Education from Benedictine Heights College in Guthrie, OK in 1949 and Master's degree in Art Education at Northeastern State University and a Master's in Religious Education from the Aquinas Institute of Religious Studies in 1977.

Sr. Eugenia taught music for many years in parish schools around Oklahoma. After her teaching career, Sr. Eugenia served in religious education and pastoral ministry at Holy Family Cathedral for twenty-five years and then at St. Patrick's Church in Sand Springs until her retirement. In retirement, she volunteered weekly at Catholic Charities. Sr. Eugenia was an accomplished artist with her primary work in watercolors. She participated in countless art shows around the state of Oklahoma.

Sr. Eugenia is that she had a profound love of God and found God present in truth and beauty. She was able to see beauty all around her, especially in nature. Additionally, she really lived our value of love of learning. Up until her last illness she was constantly reading. She truly studied until she could no longer read. She took regularly took art classes and exhibited her work in many art shows and galleries. She was never satisfied that she had "learned enough" about art, the world and certainly not about God. We are grateful that she now sees God face to face.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Mary Anna (Conway) Brown and her brothers, Rev. Matthew Brown, OSB and Patrick Conway. She is survived by her Benedictine Community and many cousins including Connie Martinez of Lawton and Rose Wathen of Tennessee. The Benedictine Sisters are grateful for the loving care Sr. Eugenia received from the monastery health care staff. Donations in Sr. Eugenia's memory may be made to the monastery health care center or to Catholic Charities.
