Sr. Mary Michael (Evangeline) Schwarz was born on the family farm in Manchester, Oklahoma, October 13, 1920, and died November 4, 2015, at St. Joseph Monastery in Tulsa. She was the first of seven children born to Fred and Margaret (Wenke) Schwarz. She entered the Benedictine Sisters in Guthrie in 1940 and professed her perpetual vows in 1945.
She received a B.S. in Education from Benedictine Heights College in 1950 and began a lifelong career as a teacher in Catholic Schools in Oklahoma. She served as a teacher in Guthrie, McAlester, Henryetta, Oklahoma City, and at St. Catherine's School and Monte Cassino School, in Tulsa. She also served at the Diocesan Orphanage in Bethany, OK. After retiring from full time duties in the classroom, Sr. Michael served as the librarian at Rosary School in Oklahoma City and then as a library assistant at Monte Cassino School from 2005 until 2015.
Sr. Mary Michael embodied the Benedictine Value of Love of Learning. She had an innate curiosity and was always eager to learn something new. She was dedicated to her students and to cultivating a love of learning in them. She was a prayerful woman and thoroughly dedicated to serving others in whatever way she was asked.
Sr. Mary Michael was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gilbert Schwarz; and sister, Geraldine Schwarz. She is survived by: her sisters, Bernardine Lynch, Loraine Stewart, Teresa Schachle, Rita Giroux; sister-in-law, Betty Sue Schwarz; many nieces and nephews; and her Sisters of St. Joseph Monastery.
An Evening Prayer Service will be held Friday, November 6th, at 7:00 p.m. and a Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at 2:00 p.m. Both services will take place in the Marian Chapel at Monte Cassino School in Tulsa.
