Sylvester L. Hunter, Sr. took his first breath on February 4, 1935 in a loving home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was an only child. Sylvester attended St. Monica Catholic School and graduated in 1954. He was a loyal member of St. Monica Catholic Church.
Following school, Sylvester joined the United States Air Force and served our country from 1955 to 1958. In August 1961, Sylvester met and married Imogene Johnson, and to this union they were blessed with four sons.
During his career, he was gainfully employed at St. John Hospital and the Tulsa Country Deputy Sherriff's Department. After 27 years of employment with American Airlines, Sylvester officially retired from the workforce.
Sylvester was a member of the Chorus of Angels Choir (under the direction of Elmer Lee Davis, Sr.), a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 4519, a member of Peter Claver Council 317, a retired member of the Twenty Gents Club, and a member of St. Monica Catholic Church Choir.
If you wanted to know where Sylvester liked to eat? He loved to have breakfast at the Corner Café and Denny's. He enjoyed football games as a die-hard fan of the Dallas Cowboys - How 'bout 'dem Cowboys! If you ever wondered about what records he had spinning, you could find him listening to smooth jazz, one of his favorite artists being Lou Rawls. Sylvester was an avid dancer! He even competed to receive a first-place trophy in one dance contest. He loved photography and enjoyed every opportunity to snap a Polaroid!
Sylvester married his loving wife, Yvonne Fletcher, in 2005. Yvonne faithfully card for Sylvester until he took his last smile on March 20, 2017, and went home to glory. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund S. Hunter and Vernon A. Hunter, and his son, Sylvester Hunter, Jr.
Sylvester's beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of his children: Wendell (Hestella) Olden, Phillip (Sharon) Hunter, Sr., John (Lakesha) Hunter, Timothy Hunter, Felicia Minter, Patricia (Bert) Gann, Tonya (Ronald) Atkins, Cassandra (Lester) Lyons, and Glenn (Kimberly) Vann; and grandchildren: Phillip Hunter, Jr. Keivin Hunter, Tekeshia Hunter, Cessnie Sanderson, Cierra Hunter, John Trey Hunter, Jade Hunter, Travon Dupri, Mykesha Kennedy, Timeya Hunter, Wendell Olden, Jr., Tiffany MacCoubrey, Tameal Fisher, Monique Harris, TaCoya Powell, Amy Powell-Hunter, Christin Germany-Davis, Randy Germany, Lester Lyons, Jr., Renita Lewis-Bowen, Terrell Lyons, Tigeana Vann, Andra Williams and Quesha Love. He also leaves more than 30 great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel, 14th and South Boulder Avenue, Tulsa, on: Friday, March 24th, from 9 AM until 5 PM; on Saturday, from 8 AM until 4 PM; and Sunday, from 1 PM until 4:30 PM. Rosary will be said at 7 PM, on Sunday, March 26th, and Funeral Mass will be 10 AM, Monday, March 27th, both at St. Monica Parish, 633 East Marshall Place in Tulsa. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
