Viva May "Vi" Hyland, 94, went to rest peacefully and pain-free into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Nov 22, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Jewel and her children Jim Hyland, Jr and Suzanne Reid. She is survived by children Linda (Ted) Roth, Rolla Missouri; Tony Hyland, Tulsa; Paul (Renee) Hyland, Sylvania, Ohio; Therese Robinson, Tulsa; Joe (Terrie) Hyland, Owasso; and Rosemary Hyland, Tulsa; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; siblings Helen Buck, Holden, Missouri, Glenn (Margaret) Yell, Stilwell, Oklahoma; and many nieces, nephews, and devoted friends.
A farm girl from Hogeye, Arkansas, who brought her work ethic and love of nature to the big city, Vi loved her gardens. She shared her knowledge of plants with family and others, in particular her many garden club friends.
A caring mom of eight, she instilled in them a love of God and of family, and stressed the importance of good manners and a good education.
Vi was a dedicated nurse who began her career at St. Francis Hospital when the doors opened in 1960 and retired 30 years later. However, she continued to practice for many more years. Eventually she had more time to spend on her two great loves, gardening and quilting, about which she was passionate. All who knew her thought her an expert in both.
A lifelong learner, she spent many hours reading and researching a wide range of topics from plants to music to recipes to quilts and beyond.
Visitation is at 10 o'clock followed by Mass at 11 o'clock on Monday the 29th of November, at Church of the Resurrection, 4804 Fulton Avenue, in Tulsa.
A special thanks to the caring staff at Clarehouse.
Mom, "Vi", shed a tear whenever flowers were cut, so please make memorial donations to Neighbor to Neighbor.
