W. R. "Bob" Estlin passed away Sunday, September 22nd, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The child of W.A. and Allene Estlin, Bob was born in Nowata, Oklahoma. He was a survivor of Polio, including 6 months in an iron lung, when he was in the 2nd grade. Bob grew up as his mother's only child, but had a half-sister, her husband, and two nephews, living nearby. He also had many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Family was very important to him. Over his life he acquired many friends. Most of his family and friends predeceased him but were remembered fondly.
Bob was an Eagle Scout, quarterback of high school football, played first base for his high school baseball team, and was high school valedictorian. When he graduated, he was offered full scholarships at MIT and Cal Tech. Bob attended Cal Tech for several semesters then transferred to OU and earned a master's degree in mathematics. He served as Captain in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam. He worked for IBM in Tulsa and then in the Dallas area. He retired from the IBM Benchmark Center, in Texas.
When his first wife, Janet Adams, died, their daughter, Tara, was 18 months old. Bob raised Tara by himself and was extremely proud of her and her accomplishments. He married Gloria Carter, and they were happily married 31 plus years, traveling to all 50 states, 6 continents, and over 50 countries.
Bob is survived by his wife, Gloria, and daughter, Tara.
