William "Bill" Oran Huston was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on February 22, 1937 to Thomas Dix and Marguerite Huston, He passed away peacefully at home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 29, 2022 at the age of 85.
Bill grew up in Oklahoma City where he graduated from Classen High School in 1955, then attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. In 1958, he committed his life in marriage to his high school sweetheart Barbara Ann Hollis. They were married for 64 years. He served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.
Bill's career began in Hot Springs, Arkansas, working as a Sales Representative for Dierks Forest, and then moving to Hutchinson, Kansas, to work for Hines Lumber Company. He became an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. The couple returned to Oklahoma In 1971, when Bill began working for Kaibab Lumber Sales. Moving to Tulsa, they were happy to be reunited with family and friends. Soon after, Bill founded his own business, Huston Lumber Sales, which he operated for 47 years.
Bill excelled in making friends for life. He got so much pleasure from all of his long-term friendships and enjoyed socializing with them. Bill loved life, being passionate about his family, friends, church, country, and his dogs. With a number of lifelong hunting buddies, he was an avid hunter and lover of the outdoors. One of his favorite hobbies, having attained his pilot license in 1976, was piloting his plane. He served as a Boy Scout leader for his sons and many other young men. He always found humor in any occasion, and will be remembered for his quick wit, kindness, friendly nature, willingness to help others and his unwavering Christian faith.
Bill was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and Elder, leading youth groups, and serving on the Board of National Presbyterian Mariners while directing many family church camps in locations as far away as Alaska. A member of the Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church, Bill sang in the choir for 49 years and served in numerous volunteer activities. He had a beautiful tenor voice and enjoyed sharing this gift with others. For over 25 years, every Sunday afternoon Bill led the singing at two local nursing homes. He loved people and had a big heart for helping others. For him, philanthropy was always personal and hands-on.
Bill is survived by his wife and four children- William Todd Huston and his wife Julie, Scott Huston, Rev. Stephen Huston and his wife Heather, and Jennifer Weber and her husband Brad. He was blessed with 6 grandchildren and was very proud of Joshua, Matthew, Julia, Zach, Harrison and Courtney. He is also survived by his twin sister Sue Engelbach and her husband Jay, and many other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Huston.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 A.M. on November 12, 2022 at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church.
